Epic Games To Cut Nearly 900 Jobs
(Reuters) – “Fortnite” maker Epic Games is laying off about 900 employees, or 16 percent of its workforce, Bloomberg News reported on Thursday.
The video game industry is grappling with a slowdown in spending as inflation-weary gamers become more selective about popular games.
The dismissals were announced in a memo sent to the staff, the report refers to people familiar with the matter.
Epic Games was not immediately available for comment.
Legacy video game publishers have also battled for top spots with newcomers such as Warner Bros Discovery, whose “Harry Potter”-based game “Hogwarts Legacy” was a big hit.
Epic has been in a legal battle with Apple since 2020, when the game company claimed that Apple’s practice of charging up to 30% commissions for in-app payments on iPhones and other devices violated US antitrust laws.
Apple on Thursday asked the US Supreme Court to overturn an order requiring changes to its App Store rules stemming from an antitrust case.
